As a former TV reporter, I would evne take number two one step further and foster relationships with producers and reporters. They need story ideas to pitch in their editorial meetings. Also.. join a journalists association and make some connections.

AGREE. I produce a show that airs on PBS affiliates and can't stand when people don't bother to ask me if it's a good time to talk, or briefly tell me what they're pitching. People need to refine their elevator pitches.

Great article, Shawn. I agree wholeheartedly with the "honesty is best" approach, especially in times of scandal.

The American public may be fickle in regards to what stories matter to them, but once they're invested they can't be shaken off by spin. They most certainly can't be - and refuse to be - "handled" by misdirection or clever PR tactics.

Integrity matters, and it's a requisite attribute - and key to success - in all relationships, private and public.

Hello Mr. Bannon,

I just read your article that was in part about my city of Green Bay.

I hereby extend a personal invitation to you and your family to come to Green Bay as my guest. I will give you a personal tour of the city, the history, and yes, even arrange for Lambeau Field. I'm a nobody here but I have a passion for the city like none other. I do all I can to increase awareness of the great facets of this city begining with those in my community.

Should you choose to visit us and experience our warmth for yourself, I am at your service.

I enjoyed reading your article and appreciate your spreading the word that we are not all hicks up here :o)

Warmest regards,
Elle Borowitz
Green Bay, WI

It is 4:41pm and I have not heard what Tiger Woods had to say this morning. I have no intentions to listen to what I don't believe is any of my business. That said, I do hope that however Mr. Woods addresses the insensitive baying of the media, I hope his words will fall fresh with the same spirit as the speech I just read from Shawn Bannon.

Here's a great blog with another suggested Tiger speech for this morning. It goes a lot further than I think Tiger will go in an effort to explain things and win over those who will listen, but I love the way it's written.

Well, Michael, I think I'd have to argue that she actually said a lot more than just the six words that were written as a reminder on the palm of her hand. If my math is right *and* if she were being paid on a per-word basis, I think it figures out to something like $18/word at almost 5,600 words. I bring this up only to reinforce the point that these few words were only ever intended to serve as guideposts or landmarks -- signals to help ensure she stays on track during Q&A after a long speech in which she covered a lot of ground.

So, I'd hold off on that tattoo for now. Still, not a bad take for one night's work!

The problem with her writing notes on her hand is that it just adds to the perception that she's not serious about anything. Writing things on your hands is childish and unprofessional. Had she had the notes on paper/index cards or used a teleprompter, would she be ridiculed? Probably because she is for every little thing she does...and unfairly at times.
